The Spey Catchment Initiative (SCI) is proud to announce its recognition in a Parliamentary Motion at Holyrood, following a visit by Members of the Scottish Parliament to the Allt Lorgy River Restoration Project in August 2024.
The motion, submitted by Emma Roddick, MSP for Highlands and Islands, congratulates the SCI for receiving the inaugural Scottish Gamekeepers Association Award for Wild Salmon Conservation, which we jointly won with the River Carron Conservation Association. This prestigious award acknowledges the innovative work done on the Allt Lorgy River Restoration Project—a project that is paving the way for future conservation efforts in Scotland.
The Allt Lorgy project, located near Carrbridge, focused on rehabilitating a historically straightened section of the burn using a stage zero approach. This technique removes all human-made constraints, allowing natural river processes to re-establish themselves, providing vital habitat for Atlantic salmon and other wildlife.
With Atlantic salmon populations facing increasing pressures from climate change and habitat degradation, this project exemplifies how innovative restoration techniques can make a lasting impact. The Parliamentary Motion highlights SCI’s important contribution to safeguarding these critical ecosystems and encourages future conservation efforts.
We are honoured by this recognition and remain committed to enhancing and restoring river habitats across the Spey catchment for the benefit of wildlife and local communities.
The motion was supported by multiple MSPs, including George Adam, Clare Adamson, and Jeremy Balfour, among others.
Congratulations to the team for this tremendous achievement!
